Ancestry Library Edition Database

Wanganui District Library provides free access to Ancestry Library Edition database for our customers.  This is an international family history database, with more than 4 billion names from over 4,000 collections.  Ancestry Library Edition includes records from:

  • New Zealand Electoral Rolls 1853-1981
  • New Zealand Army nominal rolls for WWI &WWII
  • United Kingdom and Ireland Census Collection, 1861-1901
  • Birth, Marriage and Death Records Collection
  • U.S. Federal Census Collection, with everyname indexes and original images from 1790 through 1930
  • Map Center, with 1,000 historical maps

Access this database through the Aotearoa People’s Network Kaharoa computers and free wireless connection at:

The Alexander Heritage & Research Library provides free access to these alternative international family history databases for our customers.

Maori Land Court Minute Book Index

The Maori Land Court Minute Books database indexes:

  • over 1,100 minute books between 1865 and 1910
  • includes the Taitokerau, Waikato – Maniapoto, Tairawhiti, Waiariki, Aotea, Takitimu and Waipounamu Maori Land Court Districts.
  • References are given to cases with Minute Book volume and page numbers. 

Access this database through the two Research Computers in the Alexander Heritage and Research Library.

The Alexander Heritage and Research Library holds an incomplete set of microfilm copies of the Aotea Maori Land Court Records Wanganui Minute Books. 

Complete copies of the Minute Books for Aotea are kept by the Maori Land Court, 74 Ingestre Street, Wanganui, ph (06) 349 0770.

Recent Maori Land Court records can be searched using the Maori Land Online database.

Birth, Death and Marriage Historical Records Online

The Birth, Death and Marriage Historical Records website allows you to search New Zealand Government records for births, deaths and marriages (BDM).

The historic data available for you to search is limited so that information relating to people who might still be alive, can be protected. Information available includes:

  • Births that occurred at least 100 years ago
  • Stillbirths that occurred at least 50 years ago
  • Marriages and eventually Civil Unions that occurred 80 years ago
  • Deaths that occurred at least 50 years ago or the deceased's date of birth was at least 80 years ago.
